Colette Salemi

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. My development and environmental economics research focuses on migration, conflict, natural resources, and ecosystem services.

My research draws on remotely sensed geographic information systems (GIS) data as well as household microdata. I use quasi-experimental approaches to evaluate the impacts of forced displacement on the landscape and to better understand the relationship between conflict and food/resource security. I also study improved cookstove programs, their international scope, carbon crediting, and impacts on household welfare and deforestation. I’m also interested in natural capital in forests from a sustainable development and ecosystem service perspective.

I received my PhD in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota in May 2022. I also hold a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from Williams College, an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago, and an MA in Public Policy from the University of Chicago.
